First Grade - Six Books in Six Weeks Reading Challenge #1
Students that read, quiz, and score 80% or higher on seven (6) Accelerated Reader Books* or earn equivalent to AR points will earn a Reward (TBA)
Six Books in Six Weeks Challenge!
Dear First Grade Parents,
Your child will be participating in his/her 1stAccelerated Reader (AR) reading challenge this third quarter. Your child’s goal is to READ six (6) books in six (6) weeks, quiz, and score 80% or higher on each corresponding AR quiz to qualify for the Reading Challenge Reward. Students will have until Friday, May 3, 2019 to reach their goal. Students who reach or exceed their goal will be acknowledged and rewarded at a grade level Party (TBA).
The current STAR Reading Report (see attachment) will determine your child’s suggested reading range or ZPD(Zone of Proximal Development). It is important that children read books within their ZPD in order to build fluency, comprehension, and confidence. Students are not limited to the books in our library. There are over 190,000 quizzes available in AR. Please check ARbookfind.comto determine if there is a corresponding quiz for the book your child will be reading.
For this challenge and the remainder of the school year, students may check out up to two (2) books at a time from the school library. Please help your child to remember to bring their library books back in order for them to check out other books. Students have been practicing using our OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) to search for books within their reading ranges, logging into their AR accounts, and quizzing. We encourage parents to check out books from the public library or visit your local book store.
Parents are welcome to accompany their child in the mornings to provide the extra help they may need with accessing AR on the school computers or locating appropriate books in the library. This will also give parents an opportunity to see the format and types of questions on quizzes. However, in order for your child to become an independent reader, please do NOT help your child with quiz questions or answers. Parents are encouraged to help start a reading log with their child. Just jot down the title (and author) and AR quiz number of the book(s) your child has read and send it back in their communication folder to bring to the library.
Due to our site license agreement, AR quizzes should only be taken at school. Students will have an opportunity to take quizzes in the library on your child’s library media support days (twice a week) OR in the mornings, during OPEN Circulation, M-F from 7:30-7:55. Students may be allowed to take AR quizzes in their classroom if time permits and at the discretion of the classroom teacher. We strongly suggest students carefully read their (fiction/chapter) books and in most cases re-read their (Easy Fiction) books. Student will NOT be able to re-quiz on the same book twice. Although students cannot quiz at home, parents can view AR progress through Renaissance Home Connect (see attachment).
If you have any questions about the AR Reading Program, please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected]or check out my library website. Please encourage and help your child by listening to them read on a daily basis. J
